Back then, we failed to realize the implications of our actions or the repercussions of a developed society highly dependent on petroleum and incessantly slave to the dictates of the mighty oil barons.

When automated vehicles were first introduced to the world, could anyone have anticipated the vast impact it will have to the economy? Who would have thought that combustion engines would turn out and be the backbone of today’s society? Decades ago, this idea seemed to be too great to fathom. However, its environmental impact was then, not recognized probably because of lack of foresight.


Biodiesel: Pros

The fuel generated by biodiesel processors is an inherent solvent; meaning, sooner or later it will trigger the deterioration of various rubber components such as hoses and pumps. Though this can be easily replaced by visiting your local dealer. Sometimes extra tubing is included in a biodiesel expansion pack. This package is ideal if you plan to make batches and batches of biodiesel.

Also, this solvent characteristic will clean the injectors and the tank, as well as the fuel lines; the downside is that, blockage is inevitable. But this is not a reason to be worried. Just prepare yourself to a frequent filter change for the first couple tanks of biodiesel.

As for the gel point, biodiesel posts higher than that of its petroleum equivalent. This connotes that the former coagulates faster. But, this too, can be resolved by using an anti-gel additive.

You can also use vegetable oil that has already been used. Which ever route you choose getting your processor set up at home is not that difficult. Follow the instructions closely and heed all the safety precautions before you begin to process your biodiesel. You are refining a fuel oil which requires high temperatures so there is a risk of burns if you follow the proper procedures.

If you are unsure if making biodiesel is something you want to do you might try finding someone close by who is already making it. Most people who refine this alternative fuel are more then willing to share their knowledge because that’s the best way to advertise its benefits. Chances are they will walk you through the whole process, letting you get a hands on feel for what is involved.

The three main types of heating systems offered today are:

-Oil Preheating Systems.
-In-Line Heating Systems.

Oil preheating systems are a safe traditional method of pre-heating the oil prior to processing. The system conists of a steel drum with at least one thermostat controlled barrel heater and insulation. This is a very safe method because there are no heating elements in contact with the liquid. In-Line Heating Systems

Better For:

– Pre-heating your oil.
– Drying water-washed biodiesel

Drawbacks:

– Requires a pump to operate.
– Cannot heat throughout entire process.
– Elements must be replaced periodically.

In-line heating systems are better than a pre-heating system but they have one common flaw, they all require a pump to circulate the oil through the heater in order for the heater to work. They are mainly intended to pre-heat the oil and dry the water out of biodiesel that has been water-washed. With an in-line heater using submerged elements, the user must remember to start the flow of liquid before turning the heater on.Note: All heaters have what is called a Watt Density. Watt density is the number of watts the heater puts out divided by the surface area of the heaters element. Processing Of Biodiesel

On August 10 1893, an engine running on Biodiesel ran for the first time. This is why this day has been declared as ‘International Biodiesel day’. This model was proposed by Rudolf Diesel. The transesterified oil that was used as source for the first run was Peanut oil. Biodiesel is a liquid produced form materials or biological origin unlike petrodiesel made from fossil fuel. Known previously as American Society for Testing and Materials, the ATSM has certified Biodiesel as confirming to the ATSM D 6751 standards.

The sources of biodiesel can be divided into:
1) Lipid accumulation in plants and algae
2) Hydrocarbons produced in algae or plants.

The lipid sources can be sunflower, linseed, Jatropha, safflower, peanut, rapeseed, olive seeds etc. These lipids have high energy value but are highly viscous. Hence they cannot be easily injected in the engine combustion chambers. This limitation is suggested to be solved by a process called pyrolysis or blending with solvents, emulsification with addition of water or fuels etc, but none proved fit. It was later decided that synthesizing esters of fatty acid was the solution to the viscosity problem. But production from edible oils commands a high price even in developed countries. Hence non-edible oils are the fresh sources for biodiesel. E.g.: Jatropha. These are now cultivated in large areas and researched for biodiesel production.

Certain algae accumulate large (about 60%) of Lipids in their cells when grown in a nutritionally suffucient medium. This property can be exploited to produce large amounts of lipids. Some freshwater algae and plants also store hydrocarbons (made of hydrogen and carbon atoms). E.g. in Botryococcus braunii, 75% of biomass is made of hydrocarbons. Other brown, red and green algae consist of varying amounts of Lipid content. USA, Austria, France, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Malaysia, Italy & other Asian countries have realized the benefits of Biodiesel. These countries are now competing in research on Biodiesel and its production.

The basic chemistry of biodiesel synthesis lies in transesterification process, where an ethyl ester reacts with methanol to form methyl ester and ethanol. Glycerol is a by – product developed in the process which ahs other industrial applications. Methyl esters are favoured for biodiesel production because of the cetane number.

Cetane number is a dimensionless value assigned to indicate the ignition quality of a liquid. This value is high, in case of long unbranched alkanes which are similar long chained compounds. High cetane numbers are related to compound that have low idle noise and easy starting even in cold weather. Though Biodiesel holds much promise for the future, its list of cons includes its properties as being a solvent, able to take up water from the atmosphere etc and sometimes providing reduced power in engines.

Many have patented the process of producing Biodiesel and one such patent is owned by DuPont and Colgate-Palmolove-Peet, and also by CLRI (India). Biodiesel is available nationwide. It can be purchased from the legalized biodiesel distributors, producers and marketers, or even at a public pump throughout any nation. Biodiesel does have its cons, however the pros outweigh them. By using biodiesel, you can take off the noxious gases from the equation and you have an environmentally-friendly vehicle.

The Repercussions of Petro-Diesel

The congestion in our highways may have subsided but our dependency on foreign oil providers may have just become a little tighter and a tad bit severe.

What is Palm Oil biodiesel?

It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Palm Oil Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

How is Palm Oil Biodiesel made?
Palm Oil Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the Palm oil. The process leaves behind two products — methyl esters (the chemical name for palm oil biodiesel) and glycerin (a valuable byproduct usually sold to be used in soaps and other products).

Is Palm Oil Biodiesel the same thing as raw vegetable palm oil?
No! Fuel-grade palm oil biodiesel must be produced to strict industry specifications (ASTM D6751) in order to insure proper performance. Palm Oil Biodiesel is one of the few biodiesels to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Biodiesel that meets ASTM D6751 and is legally registered with the Environmental Protection Agency is a legal motor fuel for sale and distribution. Raw Palm Oil cannot meet biodiesel fuel specifications, it is not registered with the EPA, and it is not a legal motor fuel.

For entities seeking to adopt a definition of biodiesel for purposes such as federal or state statute, state or national divisions of weights and measures, or for any other purpose, the official definition consistent with other federal and state laws and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidelines is as follows:

Palm Oil Biodiesel is defined as mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from Palm Oil vegetable oils which conform to ASTM D6751 specifications for use in diesel engines. Biodiesel refers to the pure fuel before blending with diesel fuel. Biodiesel blends are denoted as, "BXX" with "XX" representing the percentage of biodiesel contained in the blend (ie: B20 is 20% biodiesel, 80% petroleum diesel).

Why should I use palm oil biodiesel?
Palm Oil Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable resources, i.e. Palm Oil and has lower emissions compared to petroleum diesel. It is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar. Since it is made from renewable resources i.e. Palm Oil, its use decreases our dependence on foreign oil and contributes to our own economy.

Where do I get Palm oil biodiesel?
It can be purchased directly from biodiesel producers and marketers, petroleum distributors.

What is biodiesel?

Very often, a broad, general description is used to define biodiesel in a way that is easy to understand by the general public. However, when these broad descriptions are adopted by an authoritative body as a formal definition, they can include a wide range of experimental fuels that are not biodiesel. The term ‘biodiesel’ has a specific, technical definition that has been agreed to through a painstaking process by members of industry and government which has received full approval by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), the premier standard setting organization for fuels and fuel additives. That definition is used for purposes such as alternative fuel designation, EPA registration, or other regulatory purposes. Nonetheless, this specific technical definition can be confusing to the general public.

General Definition of Biodiesel:
Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable fuel for diesel engines derived from natural oils like soybean oil, palm oil and which meets the specifications of ASTM D 6751.

Clarifying language to general definition:
Biodiesel can be used in any concentration with petroleum based diesel fuel in existing diesel engines with little or no modification. Biodiesel is not the same thing as raw vegetable oil. It is produced by a chemical process which removes the glycerin from the oil.

Technical Definition for Biodiesel (ASTM D 6751) and Biodiesel Blend:
Biodiesel, na fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats, designated B100, and meeting the requirements of ASTM D 6751.

Biodiesel Blend, na blend of biodiesel fuel meeting ASTM D 6751 with petroleum-based diesel fuel, designated BXX, where XX represents the volume percentage of biodiesel fuel in the blend.

Clarifying language to technical definition:
Biodiesel, as defined in D 6751, is registered with the US EPA as a fuel and a fuel additive under Section 211(b) of the Clean Air Act.

Vegetables Oils That Can Be Made Into A Biodiesel

Biofuel is a fuel comparable to petroleum based diesel fuel, but is made from vegetable oil. Vegetable oil is derived from plants and has similar fuel properties to diesel fuel. It can be used to make biodiesel. Biofuel is an alternative fuel that came from 100% renewable resources. It is made through a simple process of mixing some common and non toxic chemical so it is environmental friendly. The following are the list of vegetables oils that can turn into a biofuel.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is extracted from copra (dried meat, or kernel, of the coconut). Coconut oil has many types and uses. It is commonly used in cooking, manufacturing and skin treatment. Coconut oil has been tested for use as a feedstock for biodiesel to be used as a diesel engine fuel; it is typically blended to make biodiesel. It can be used as a fuel to reduce expenses and the dependence on imported fuels.

Peanut Oil

It is organic oil derived from peanut; it is most commonly used when frying foods. Peanut oil was also used as the original source of fuel for the diesel engine.

Palm oil

It is a form of edible vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the oil palm tree. Palm oil is also an important component of soaps, washing products, and other cosmetic products. Best of all, like other vegetable oils, it can be used to create biodiesel for internal combustion engine.

Corn oil

It is extracted from the germ of corn (maize). Commonly used for cooking and also known as a key ingredient in some margarines. Corn oil is also one source of biodiesel, It is expected to become a greater source of biodiesel and a backup source in case of large-scale soybean crop failures.

Repeseed Oil

It is a bright yellow flowering member of the family Brassicaceae (mustard or cabbage family). It is grown for production of animal feed, vegetable oil and also for biodiesel. Rapeseed oil can be used in manufacturing of biodiesel for powering motor vehicles.

Babassu Oil

Also known as cusi oil, a clear light yellow vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the babassu palm. It was also used in a blend with coconut oil and jet fuel to power one engine of a Virging Atlantic Boeing 747 during a flight test.

Arthichoke Oil

It is extracted from the seed of the Cynara Cardunculus (Cardoon). It is similar to safflower and sunflower. It also has attracted recent attention as a possible source of biodiesel.

Sunflower Oil
A non volatile oil expressed from the seed of sunflower. It is commonly used in cooking, and cosmetic formulation. It can also produce biodiesel, it is much cheaper than olive oil.

Soybean Oil

It is a primary source of biodiesel in United States.

Perilla Oil

It is obtained from the seeds of perennial herbs of the genus Perilla, Perilla oil can also be used for fuel.

Hemp Oil

It has many uses including paper, textiles and biodegrable plastics and it can also use as fuel.

Ben Oil

A vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the Moringa Oleifera. An extremely edible oil that is suitable for biofuel.

Honge Oil

A tree thought to have originated in India. It was pioneered as a biofuel.

Jatropha Oil

A vegetable oil produced from the seeds of the Jathropa curcas. Jathropa Oil came from crushed seeds and can be processed to produce a high-quality biodiesel.

Copaiba Oil

Used as a cosmetic product in Brazil and a major source of biodiesel

Jojoba Oil

A cheap sustainable fuel that can serve as a substiture for petroleum diesel.

Milk Bush

It is a genus of plants belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. Milk bush can produce poisonous latex that can be converted to the equivalent of gasoline.

Petrolium Nut Oil

It is a tree that grows in the Philippines. The fruits are highly suitable for use in producing biofuel.

Biofuel can also be made from WVO (waste vegetable oil), which is previously used vegetable oil, like that which would be discarded from restaurants and delis. When using WVO to make Biodiesel there is an additional process that has to be undertaken to remove all the impurities, while this process would add to the overall cost of the fuel, it would not be prohibitive. It can be financially profitable to use WVO as a source for Biodiesel, but there are already other established industries using WVO in their manufacturing process.

According to current statistic, theoretically, petroleum will be finished very soon. But practically, petroleum will never finish. When the remaining petroleum starts to decrease, the price for petroleum will increase. Crude oil price on 1861 was $0.49, and prize on June 2008 was $139. At a point where the price of the petroleum is high enough, human will search for alternative energy source. For example: biodiesel. Biodiesel which was expensive to do research and used by human will not be expensive anymore when the petroleum price is high enough. Alternative resources will replace petroleum in future; we will not need petroleum anymore. The use of biodiesel out of waste vegetable oil can be a great help to ease the problem of world’s great demand for fuel.

There are so many benefits of using this source to replace fossil fuels. Some of these include reduced air pollution, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and conservation of limited fossil fuels. There are two different ways that you can use vegetable oil as a fuel in engines.

The first way is you can use straight vegetable oil either waste frying oil or fresh- pressed oil, however you will need an extra fuel tank and a system for heating and filtering the oil before it reaches the engine. The reason why you will need this is because pure vegetable oil is too thick to work in the engine unless the oil is heated up.
The other way is to simply convert the vegetable oil into biodiesel which can be used in a diesel engine without any modifications. Biodiesel is a fuel source made from vegetable oil when a chemical reaction occurs between methanol and lye. It can be created either from using waste vegetable oil from the food industry, or you have the other option of using fresh-pressed vegetable oil. This is something that is now being made to sell commercially in thousands of countries all around the world.
Either way, both processes can help reduce the world’s great demand for fuel. As of Year 2000 up to date, United States alone was producing in excess of 11 billion liters of waste vegetable oil annually, mainly from industrial deep fryers in potato processing plants, snack food factories and fast food restaurants. If we can just make this waste vegetable oil be converted into biodiesel, almost 1% Of US oil consumption can be offset. Plus the fact that it can also help save our environment. Some of the toxic air pollutants can be reduced including soot, particulates, carbon monoxide, and sulphur oxides. Waste vegetable oils can be a great source of money, from waste to money, by converting it to biodiesel.

Making Your Own Biodiesel

To make your own biodiesel you can go here!!

Home Biodiesel processors are very easy to assemble. Biodiesel processors can come from some materials which you can recycle from home or from some stuff from the junk yard:

Assembling the drum

1. Cut half of the top of the steel drum. Better if you can find a drum which doesn’t have the top anymore.

2. Prepare a hole for pipe attachment at the bottom of the drum. Do this by drilling a one and a half inch hole

3. Weld the pipe into the hole that you just drilled

4. Attach a brass ball valve which will serve as the drain control. Brass ball valves are more durable and are recommended for home made biodiesel processors.

5. Fit the heater element onto a hole that you will drill on the side of the drum. Heater elements can be purchased from your local hardware or be recycled from your old water heater

6. Wire the heater element properly

Chemical Mixer

1. Fasten one pulley to the mixer

2. Assemble the other pulley to the spindle of the motor

3. Weld the propellers to the end of the steel rod

4. Attach the mixer to the hinge so you can move it whenever needed

5. Weld the mixer assembly on the top of the drum using angled iron as support

6. Attach one side of the hinge to the angle iron to set the mixer in the middle of the drum

7. Tightly fit the belt to the pulleys by placing a block of wood into the hinge. The mixing capability is essential to Biodiesel processor to obtain good quality fuel.

8. Attach a measuring stick made of wood to know the quantity of the Biodiesel being produced

Here are some more pointers:

Biodiesel processors are just like big blenders. The rotors will mix the raw Biodiesel.

Biodiesel containers must be leak free. Instead of welding, industrial adhesives can be used to assemble Biodiesel processors. For portability, you can attach industrial wheels so you can move it from one place to another.

Remember the precautions to be observed during the production of Biodiesel. The process involves handling of hazardous chemicals before you can yield usable Biodiesel fuel.
